For licensed nicotine vape businesses
Vape merchant accounts for vape shops, smoke shops, online stores and e-liquid brands. We approve you as a vape business up front, so you won't lose processing later when a provider finds out what you sell. Clear pricing, honest limits, and a real team that picks up the phone.
It's a card processing account that a bank has approved specifically for selling tobacco and vapor products. It's coded to the tobacco merchant category (MCC 5993) and, for online sales, registered with the card networks. Because your processor knows what you sell from day one, there's nothing to "discover" later. General-purpose apps work differently: Square, for example, supports tobacco sales in person only, so an online store needs an account built for card-not-present vape sales.
We work with
Businesses selling FDA-authorized nicotine vape products to adults 21+, along with the hardware and accessories that go with them. As of September 2026, the FDA has authorized 48 e-cigarette products.
We don't process
THC products of any kind, including hemp-derived delta-8, delta-9 and THCA vapes. For now, we also don't process vape products that are awaiting FDA review (PMTA pending) or unauthorized, including unauthorized disposables.
Selling CBD-only products? See CBD merchant accounts. Card networks and processors now look closely at which products you carry, including FDA authorization and state directory listings. So tell us your product list and we'll confirm fit before you apply. What FDA authorization means for merchants.
Approval depends on three things: who you are, what you sell and how you sell it. Underwriters review your business documents, your product list and, if you sell online, your website and age verification.
Vape is priced as high risk, so expect more than a standard retail account. What matters is that the pricing is transparent and every fee is disclosed before you sign.
Your processor now checks what you sell, not just who you are. Online tobacco sales carry card-network registration requirements, and product legality has become an account risk of its own.
Selling vapes online or by phone makes you a "delivery seller" under the federal PACT Act. Processors ask for proof you're set up for it before they approve online sales.
In June 2026 Shopify banned all vaping products from its platform (announced by California's Attorney General on June 23), and stores reportedly had until early July to remove them. Stores are moving to WooCommerce, BigCommerce and Magento, where you choose your own payment provider.
Most vape shutdowns come from platform rules, not bad behavior: Square is in-person only for tobacco, Stripe allows only FDA-authorized products, and PayPal requires pre-approval. The money in the account can be held for months.
Vape disputes cluster around age, delivery and subscriptions: a card used without permission, a package that wasn't signed for, or an auto-ship the customer forgot about. The right records prevent most of them and win the rest.

Only in limited ways. As of September 2026, Square supports in-person tobacco sales only, with no online, phone or mail orders, and Stripe allows US vape merchants to sell only FDA-authorized products. A merchant account underwritten for vape adds what Square doesn't support, such as online and phone orders, on an account coded for vape from day one. It doesn't widen the product line: START also works with FDA-authorized products only. What Square, Stripe and PayPal allow →

Yes, for now. We work with businesses selling FDA-authorized nicotine vape products. As of September 2026, that's 48 products on the FDA's list. We don't currently process products that are awaiting FDA review (PMTA pending), including those covered by the FDA's May 2026 enforcement guidance, or unauthorized products such as unauthorized disposables. Send us your product list and we'll check it before you apply. FDA-authorized vapes explained →
Yes, if the store is set up to sell legally online: age verification at checkout, PACT Act registration and reporting, and adult-signature delivery. Card networks also require online tobacco merchants to be registered, which your processor handles. PACT Act and age verification guide →
Vape is priced as high risk, so expect more than a standard retail account. Ask for interchange-plus pricing, your effective rate and any reserve terms in writing. START uses interchange-plus pricing with no termination, annual or address-verification fees. Vape shop rates, fees and reserves →
Yes. Your bank account holds your money; a merchant account is what lets you accept cards and deposits those sales into your bank account. They are separate accounts, often with separate providers.
Your business formation documents and EIN, owner IDs, bank and processing statements, any state tobacco or vapor license, and a list of the products you sell. Online sellers should also have age verification and PACT Act registration in place. Vape merchant account requirements →
